About

Veritas 2023 Monticello White

Wine Style
Elevator Pitch

This is our first release of Monticello White under our Veritas label. We have bottled it a few times in our Momentarius line, which is a series of blends put together specifically for our Wine Club Members. Because it was so well received, and because it became an anticipated and exciting project in the cellar with the challenge of blending these unique white grapes while still finding balance, we decided it needed its own place in our lineup.

The main goal of this wine is to formulate a stylistic white blend made up of white grapes that are the most commonly planted in the Monticello AVA.

Rich, full of ripe fruit, and perfectly balanced with a very long finish. This complex wine shows off stunning stone fruit flavors like white peach before opening up to fresh citrus and white flowers.

A perfect example to show off the depth and age-worthiness of Virginia’s white wines.

Pairings

In a Pinch

Salmon, Sea bass, or cave-ripened cheeses.

Deeper Dive

Some wines hit you with all the acidity up front, this one seems to wait for all the flavors to unfurl before refreshing your palate on the mid palate and the finish. It’s a great example of when someone says “acidity is the backbone of a wine.”

That’s going to be great for pairings, because it means the rich mouthfeel of the wine will be nicely balanced by the elevated acidity, giving you a wider range of options.

Shellfish, and oily fishes like sea bass and salmon are going to work great here, as well as poultry given that the sauces aren’t too rich. Aged cheeses are also going to play well with this wine.

Stand out features: Soft, round mouthfeel, complexity, stone fruit.

Which glasses?

Large Burgundy glasses are going to be best to let this wine show off all its colors, but all-purpose will work as well.

Should I decant this?

Why "Probably"?

There’s a lot going on in this wine. The blend of varieties is going to give you a lineup of fruit notes waiting to present themselves, and the oak aging adds depth with more savory notes.

All of which will be better experienced with some time for the wine to breathe. Although if you don’t have a decanter, the flavors do start to come out with generous swirling, it will just take longer.

How long?

Generally you would want to decant a younger wine for longer to help it open up and be cautious of exposing older wines to oxygen for too long. There are always exceptions of course, but this is a pretty good rule to follow.

The correct serving temperature is important to show a wine’s true potential, but don’t stress over getting the temp exactly right. Use the chart below to try to get in the right ballpark.

Aging

When should I open this?

If a wine has been released by the producer and is available for sale, it means it is ready to drink. Wines don’t necessarily get “better” with age, they just change. Typically, this change involves things like losing fresh fruit flavors in exchange for more savory notes.

The moment you should open the bottle depends on your preference, so it’s more important to understand the evolution and the life span of the bottle than it is to try to time its opening perfectly. (It’s far better to open a bottle too early than too late.)

This bottle should probably be opened between:

ABOUT US

Our philosophy is to make wine with the classic, old-world principles of viticulture and vinification, at the same time using state of the art technology to capture varietal and regional character. Our name derives from the Roman historian Pliny the Elder’s observation “In Vino Veritas” – “In Wine there is Truth.” We believe that the truth in our wine comes straight from our vineyard as an expression of the land where we live and work.

Andrew & Patricia

Andrew and Patricia met and fell in love in Nottingham, England while Andrew was a young Neurologist and Patricia was a nurse. Their careers brought them to the east coast of the U.S. in the early 1970s, where they stayed until settling in Florida in the 1990’s. After successfully raising their three children and and at the height of their careers they decided to take a leap of faith and pursue their passion, wine. In 1999 they bought Saddleback Farm, which at the time was a simple horse and cattle farm. Patricia saw the potential in the land and planted several acres of grapes with a wish and prayer.

With over 50 acres in the Monticello wine region, and producing a complex portfolio of wine ranging from sparkling to beautifully balanced red wines, Veritas wine quality starts in the vineyard, and the terroir of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Winemaker Emily Hodson, daughter of Andrew and Patricia, has been the winemaker at Veritas for over 15 harvests and continues to author the beginning chapters of a young and vibrant wine region. Her philosophy is simple – she strives to give each varietal natural, balanced expression by focusing on attention to detail and cultural practices. Her old-world principles of viticulture and vinification are met with her innovative take on winemaking using state of the art technology and principles to capture the true essence and character of each varietal.
