ABOUT

Perla Terra 2021 Barolo

Perla Terra is the result of decades of love for the people, place and wines of Barolo. Sourced from some of the finest Cru vineyards of the region, the grapes are vinified using traditional methods and then aged in large oak casks for a minimum of 18 months.

2021 was a remarkable year in Piedmont and the Perla Terra’s winemaking reflects these conditions. While this wine consistently delivers year to year, the 2021 vintage produced exceptionally aromatic wines, with layers of fruit and earthy notes that spring from the glass to greet you.

PAIRINGS

IN A PINCH

Blue cheese and mushroom risotto.

DEEPER DIVE

Nebbiolo, despite being medium in body, begs for food perhaps more than any other Italian variety.

Perla Terra Barolo was brought to another level with blue cheese on water crackers and then again with veal smothered in sautéed mushrooms.

The tannins in this wine are sneaky; barely perceptible at first then increasing in their grip as the finish lingers for several seconds.

The telltale soaring acidity begs for richness to cut through. The native staple of vitello tonnato comes to mind. To truly indulge, shave fresh Piemontese truffles over some handmade tajarin with a gentle toss of cream and understand why Barolo is called the wine of kings.

Stand out features: Grippy tannins, high acidity, intense aromatics.

PAIRING SCALE

STEER CLEAR

Raw seafood will be completely lost in the grippy tannins and dominant mouthfeel.

SHOULD I DECANT THIS?

WHY “Probably“?

Both the aroma and flavor layers really began to show after 20 minutes in a decanter.

Right out of the bottle the wine was very tight and not showing its full depth.

How long?

Generally you would want to decant a younger wine for longer to help it open up and be cautious of exposing older wines to oxygen for too long. There are always exceptions of course, but this is a pretty good rule to follow.

The correct serving temperature is important to show a wine’s true potential, but don’t stress over getting the temp exactly right. Use the chart below to try to get in the right ballpark.

AGING

WHEN SHOULD I OPEN THIS?

If a wine has been released by the producer, it means it is ready to drink. Wines don’t necessarily get “better” with age, they just change. Typically, this change involves things like losing fresh fruit flavors in exchange for more savory notes.

The moment you should open the bottle depends on your preference, so it’s more important to understand the evolution and the life span of the bottle than it is to try to time its opening perfectly. (It’s far better to open a bottle too early than too late.)

This bottle should probably be opened between:

ABOUT US

Dalla Terra is excited and proud to announce the addition of Perla Terra Barolo to its portfolio of Italian Wines. For years Dalla Terra has represented some of the finest Piedmont estates and the addition of Perla Terra allows us to offer an extremely high quality Barolo at a value price point.

Made in partnership with several small growers located primarily in the communes of La Morra, Novello, Monforte d’Alba, Grinzane Cavour and Verduno, Perla Terra is vinified and bottled for Dalla Terra using traditional methods at a local winery in the Barolo region. The cru vineyard selections are vinified separately and the blend is selected by our co-owners, Brian Larky and Scott Ades.

Communes of La Morra, Novello, Monforte d’Alba, Grinzane Cavour, Verduno, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba, Barolo, Diano d’Alba and Cerasco.
