ABOUT

Eastwood 2024 Meritage

This 2024 Meritage is a “Right-bank” Bordeaux style blend, meaning it is Merlot and Cab Franc dominant instead of leading with Cabernet Sauvignon. Virginia’s red clay soil is well suited for these two leading grapes, and this Meritage shows them off with an array of dark fruit, earthy tones, and an excellent structure of elevated acidity and velvety tannins.

This bottle is ready to be enjoyed now, but can start to develop more savory notes in proper cellar conditions with a projected cellar life of about 10 years.

PAIRINGS

IN A PINCH

Lean red meats, blue cheeses.

DEEPER DIVE

This is not an overly powerful wine, which is going to allow it to have a larger pairing range. There is a lot of dark fruit up front with some earthy tones on the finish, with a firm, but not overwhelming tannic structure.

Grilled lean red meats are going to be the best option here, since you don’t want too much fat with these tannins, and the natural earthy notes like tobacco and herbs are going to go well with the smokiness from the grill.

Aged cheeses are going to be great here as well, especially blue and cheddar as they will pull out some savory notes from the wine.

STANDOUT FEATURES

  • Ripe Fruit Notes
  • Soft Tannins
  • Elevated Acidity

STEAR CLEAR

Not great for fish in general, and the extreme full end of the spectrum like rich stews might be too much for this wine.

SHOULD I DECANT THIS?

WHY “Probably”?

This wine does a good job of showing off its aromas and flavors quickly, but there is significant depth here, and a decanter would help bring that out.

HOW LONG?

Generally you would want to decant a younger wine for longer to help it open up and be cautious of exposing older wines to oxygen for too long. There are always exceptions of course, but this is a pretty good rule to follow.

The correct serving temperature is important to show a wine’s true potential, but don’t stress over getting the temp exactly right. Use the chart below to try to get in the right ballpark.

AGING

WHEN SHOULD I OPEN THIS?

If a wine has been released by the producer, it means it is ready to drink. Wines don’t necessarily get “better” with age, they just change. Typically, this change involves things like losing fresh fruit flavors in exchange for more savory notes.

The moment you should open the bottle depends on your preference, so it’s more important to understand the evolution and the life span of the bottle than it is to try to time its opening perfectly. (It’s far better to open a bottle too early than too late.)

ABOUT US

The Women of Eastwood Farm and Winery

What happens when the talents and interests of three women – specifically a mother and two of her daughters – come together serendipitously? Sometimes it creates something magical. Athena Eastwood practiced as a commodities lawyer for twenty years and was recognized for her work helping agricultural and energy clients develop innovative strategies to combat and adapt to climate change.

When she purchased a small farm just outside of the city limits of Charlottesville in 2016, she was also teaching an environmental commodities class at the University of Virginia School of Law, where the discussion often turned to the importance of developing local infrastructure – including local agriculture. At the same time, her daughter, Hannah Velie, was practicing that very theory running a non-profit farm she started in a food desert in Baltimore. Athena’s oldest daughter, Megan Velie Taub, was also focused on making a local impact – just finishing a master’s degree in developmental psychology with an emphasis on American Dream research. During that course of study, she had become passionate about the critical role of small business in creating sustainable communities.

Over many shared meals and glasses of wine, the three women, along with Athena’s unstoppable partner Jeremy Christian, decided to join forces on a project in their own backyard. Eastwood Farm and Winery is now recognized as one of the fastest growing wineries of the Monticello Wine Trail.

Welcome to the Virginia Wine Collective by Eastwood Farm and Winery. Opened in May 2025, the Collective is a dynamic wine production facility and tasting room located in Charlottesville, just three miles from Eastwood.

The space brings together nine private winemaker suites, an incubator program, and a central production area. These suites provide independent winemakers with a home to anchor their licenses and craft their wines, all within a collaborative, supportive environment. By lowering the barriers to entry, the Collective aims to foster innovation, creativity, and emerging talent throughout the Monticello AVA.

Interested in joining our wine club?

The Eastwood Wine Club is a community established by wine enthusiasts for wine enthusiasts. The founders and members are dedicated to viticulture, agriculture, and truly enjoyable food and wine that can be shared with family and friends in all of the places we spend time together.

This is a 4-bottle club with quarterly allocations. The wines of each allocation are thoughtfully chosen by our founders and team. Each allocation includes a mix of whites and reds, with a few special rosés and sparkling wines throughout the year. We take seasonality into consideration with each allocation and highlight new releases and special occasions. Each allocation is announced a couple of weeks before the release date. At that time, club members have the option to login to their accounts and customize their allocations to their liking.
