About

Chestnut Oak 2019 Chestnut One

Wine Style
Elevator Pitch

The 2019 Chestnut One is a “right-bank” Bordeaux style blend, meaning it is predominantly Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon and some Petit Verdot playing the role of blending varieties.

The wine is matured in a combination of both French and American oak of varying ages, adding complex notes and softening the tannins without overpowering the flavors with oak influence.

All of the fruit was estate grown, and harvested by hand to produce a full bodied, dark fruit driven wine that balances power and elegance.

If you like rich, dark fruit flavors, this is the wine for you. Tons of blackberry and blueberry up front, with some savory cooking spices and vanilla on the finish.

It’s a powerful wine, but all the elements are balanced and seems to have the right attributes to age very well.

Red meat and blue cheeses.

Deeper Dive

This wine is not subtle. The ripe fruit flavors are apparent from the start, and continue to evolve to earthier, more savory notes as it opens up.

Tannins are firm, but not overwhelming and the acidity is right on point to keep this wine in balance.

This is going to be a great wine for the full-bodied end of the pairing spectrum. Look to grilled fatty meats, rich cheeses, and stews to stand up to this wine.

Stand out features: Full body, firm tannins, ripe fruit.

Pairing Scale

This is a general guide to give you an idea where this wine falls in a spectrum of dish complexities.

Steer Clear

Anything too light will be easily dominated by this wine. Watch out for spice as well, as it could bring out the high alcohol.

Service

Which glasses?

Go with large Bordeaux glasses if you have them, otherwise all-purpose works just fine.

Should I decant this?

Why "probably"?

There’s a lot of complexity in this wine and the depth of which really won’t start to show without some generous oxygen.

You could still enjoy this wine right out of the bottle, but to fully experience what it has to offer, decanting is a good idea.

How long?

Generally you would want to decant a younger wine for longer to help it open up and be cautious of exposing older wines to oxygen for too long. There are always exceptions of course, but this is a pretty good rule to follow.

The correct serving temperature is important to show a wine’s true potential, but don’t stress over getting the temp exactly right. Use the chart below to try to get in the right ballpark.

Aging

When should I open this?

If a wine has been released by the producer and is available for sale, it means it is ready to drink. Wines don’t necessarily get “better” with age, they just change. Typically, this change involves things like losing fresh fruit flavors in exchange for more savory notes.

The moment you should open the bottle depends on your preference, so it’s more important to understand the evolution and the life span of the bottle than it is to try to time its opening perfectly. (It’s far better to open a bottle too early than too late.)

This bottle should probably be opened between:

2025 – 2030

Vintage

2019

This was a great vintage for most of Virginia.

There was almost no late frost to damage vines, and the growing season very warm and dry. A lot of grapes ripened early, giving vineyard managers the benefit of picking early before rainfall started in the fall.

Overall, this should be a produce wines with riper fruit flavors and good balance.

Producer

ABOUT US

In addition to our estate production, we produce wines from non-estate fruit such as Sparkling wines made from Chardonnay grapes. The Sparkling wines are produced entirely in house using traditional methods.

In 2006, we planted one acre each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Manseng. We expanded our plantings in 2014 and 2015 with Merlot, Petit Verdot, Viognier, Nebbiolo.

We utilize precise and integrated farming techniques to develop our vineyard in the best way that suits each vintage. Most of the work is done by hand under the careful guidance of our winemaker and our skilled vineyard management team.
