Grapefruit, Gooseberry, Kiwi, Fresh grass.
Chiswell 2023 Sauvignon Blanc
This Sauvignon Blanc was made in the “New World” style, meaning the aromatics are going to be super pronounced, and will have tons of ripe fruit on the palate.
That’s exactly what this wine delivers. You can start to smell some of the tropical fruits just from uncorking the bottle, and notes of grapefruit, kiwi, and gooseberry are immediately present on the first sip.
The stainless steel fermentation and maturation means that the fruit is the star of the show, and the flavors are kept fresh and crisp, making this the perfect wine going into summer.

A guaranteed crowdpleaser, but with more to show as the wine starts to open up.
Excellent for those who love Sauv Blanc but want more depth from their wines.
Soft cheeses like goat or feta, oysters.
Acidity is almost always the driving force in Sauv Blancs, but this wine has a slightly rounder body to help reign some that in and keep it perfectly balanced.
It’s bursting with tropical notes from the get go, with more and more arriving as it opens up. The body is just about medium, maybe a little less, so it’s going to be able to pair nicely with a ton of lighter dishes like salads and seafood raw bars.
Look for acidic and salty cheeses as appetizers, or any sort of summer salads. This will also be great with asian dishes provided there isn’t too much heat.
Stand out features: Acidity, tropical notes, lighter body.
This is a general guide to give you an idea where this wine falls in a spectrum of dish complexities.
Full bodied dishes like grilled meats or thick sauces. The flavors of this wine are pronounced, but it can still get overpowered by rich food.
All-purpose or white wine glasses are going to be your best bet here.
The flavors in this wine do start to unfold as it opens up, but that’s something you’d probably want to experience in your glass instead of missing it in the decanter.
The correct serving temperature is important to show a wine’s true potential, but don’t stress over getting the temp exactly right. Use the chart below to try to get in the right ballpark.
If a wine has been released by the producer and is available for sale, it means it is ready to drink. Wines don’t necessarily get “better” with age, they just change. Typically, this change involves things like losing fresh fruit flavors in exchange for more savory notes.
The moment you should open the bottle depends on your preference, so it’s more important to understand the evolution and the life span of the bottle than it is to try to time its opening perfectly. (It’s far better to open a bottle too early than too late.)

We have a 30+ year history of growing some of Virginia’s finest wine grapes right here in Albemarle County. We’ve supplied many of Virginia’s best wineries with Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot fruit since the mid-1990s from our vineyard planted on Carter Mountain.
In 2017, we planted a vineyard in Batesville and added Petit Verdot, Petit Manseng, and Sauvignon Blanc grapes to our lineup. Our newest acreage of grapes was planted at Chiswell in 2021 and includes Chambourcin, Vidal Blanc, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.
